Listening to My Inner Voice

“Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” – Steve Jobs

Very inspiring quote.  But this is easier said than done.  It takes long self examination and hard work on our part and to drown out other people’s opinions.  Especially when you’ve believed your whole life that you wanted to be accepted by those same “others.”

Merely nodding your head in agreement to popular quotes such as this one does not change you.  That, in fact, is doing exactly what the quote tells you NOT to do.  In order to make a change in yourself, you actually have to do the work.

I’m slowly learning to be indifferent to what others think or say.  …to accept what works for me and reject what does not.  This has been a lifelong project of mine – learning to think for myself and to listen to my own inner voice.

Knowing how to be your true self is a process and a skill that requires work and lots of practice to master.  Seems odd, doesn’t it?
